Notes for the Pupils
There have generally eight parts of speech namely:
- Noun
- Verb
- Pronoun
- Adjective
- Adverb
- Preposition
- Conjunction
- Interjection
Noun
A noun is a word which names ideas, person, places, things and animals.
Example:
Adamu, paper, tea, donkey.
Pronoun
Pronouns are words used to refer to things but do not name them. They are used in place of a noun.
Example:
They, it, him, us
Adjective
Adjectives are words which tell you more about nouns and pronouns.
Example:
Pretty, delicious, smooth, big
Adverb
Adverbs tell us more about verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.
Example:
Quickly, softly, here, soon
Most adverbs are formed by adding “-ly” to the adjectives
Verbs
Verbs are action or doing words.
Example:
Work, speak, remember, give
Preposition
A preposition is placed before a noun or a pronoun. It shows the relationship between nouns and pronouns in the same sentence.
Example:
Under, during, with
Conjunction
A conjunction is a word that joins words phrases or sentences together.
Example:
And, because, since, if
Interjection
An interjection is used to show sudden emotion such as surprise, joy, grief or disbelief.
Examples:
Hello!, oh no!, what!, hurrah!, oh dear!
