Brief explanation

Notes for the pupils

The word cluster means gathering or group. Consonant cluster is a group of two or more consonant sounds without a vowel sound between them. Phonetic transcription of a word helps to see the exact position of a consonant cluster in it.

Consonants can cluster in any of three different positions in a word, that is at the initial position, the medial or middle position and the final position. Our focus on today’s  lesson will be on the final position.

Examples of two consonant cluster at the final position

  Word Transcription
1. Loved /l ʌvd/
2. Lost /lost/
3. Local /ləʊkl/
4. Looked /lʊkt/
5. Fast /fa:st/
6. Mask /ma:sk/
7. Dust /dʌst/

It is important to know the position of consonant clusters in words so that we would avoid the error of pronouncing vowels where they do not exist.
