Notes for the Student
Our body needs all classes of food in order to function well. Food is any substance taken into the body for energy, growth and repairs of the body tissues.
Nutrition is the process by which the body takes in good diet, digests it for proper growth.
A balance diet is the meal that contains all the six classes of food in their correct proportions.
Classes of Food
There are six classes of food
- Carbohydrate
- Proteins
- Fat and oil
- Vitamins
- Mineral salt
- Water
Carbohydrates are energy given foods e.g. garri, yam, rice.
Proteins are mainly for building the body cells e.g. eggs, fish, meat.
Fats and oil give energy to the body e.g. palm oil, margarine. It also lubricates and keeps the body warm.
Vitamins help in good vision, formation of teeth and bones e.g. carrots, liver and tomatoes.
Minerals help in blood clothing bones and teeth formation e.g. vegetables, milk, pea, seafood.
Water serves as solvent to the body, it removes waste product from the body.
Importance of Food
- Eliminates hunger.
- Provides energy for daily activities.
- Enhances body growth.
- Provides resistance to illnesses/diseases.
- Food may serves as a source of income.
