Brief explanation

Note for the Students

Karate was introduced to Nigeria through the armed forces, it is an offensive and defensive martial art that is important to human physical and mental fitness. The benefits of karate are as follows:

  1. Karate creates fun, enjoyment and entertainment.
  2. It helps to build self-confidence and self-reliance.
  3. It promotes efficient functioning of body organs.
  4. It aids body building and self-defense.
  5. It provides a means of livelihood for the trainers, players, sponsors and officials.
  6. It helps in the development of flexibility, agility and endurance.
  7. It promotes discipline and stamina.

Skills in Karate

  1. Striking
  2. Throwing or take down
  3. Manipulation
  4. Chocking
  5. Ground fighting

Striking

  1. Maintain balance.
  2. Assume an astride position.
  3. Keep the eyes on the opponent.
  4. Flex arm in a sword like position.
  5. Hit the opponent severely at the unguarded part of his body.

Throwing

  1. Grip the opponent’s body.
  2. Build up enough force.
  3. Through the opponent forcefully off balance.
  4. Maintain balance.

Manipulation

  1. Grip the opponent’s arm forcefully.
  2. Use the arm to lock the opponent’s arm.
  3. Build up strength and power.
  4. Apply body weight and strength on the opponent.
  5. Maintain your balance.

Chocking

  1. Hold the opponent very well.
  2. Maintain the grip.
  3. Apply force in pressing his body.
  4. Maintain balance.

Ground fighting

  1. Maintain a firm grip on the opponent’s body.
  2. Turn the opponent’s body with force.
  3. Maintain the position until the opponent surrenders.

Rules in Karate

  1. No weapons is allowed.
  2. Nails should be trimmed before contest.
  3. A knock out can be awarded.
  4. Points are awarded according to hits and fall.
  5. Hitting below the belt is not allowed.
  6. Dancing around in the fighting arena is not allowed.
  7. Referee’s instructions must be obeyed.
  8. Improper dressing is not allowed.
  9. Head butting is not allowed.

Terms and Meanings in Karate

  1. Kan set su-waza – joint-lock
  2. Shime-waza – chocking of the opponent.
  3. Ne-waza – submission.
  4. Alemi-waza – striking of the opponent.
  5. Naga-waza – take down of the opponent.
