Levels of government

There are three levels of government:

  1. The federal government.
  2. The state government.
  3. The local government.
  4. The federal government: The federal government is the most serious/highest level of government. The president is the head of the federal government and also heads the executive arm of government. He is assisted by the Vice-President. The federal government includes bodies such as the federal executive council, the national Security Council etc.
  5. The state government: this is the second level of government. Each state government is headed by a governor who is assisted by the deputy governor in piloting the affairs of the state. The governors work with their cabinet members made up of commissioners and advisers.
  6. The local government: this is the last level of government. It is known as the grassroots government and it is the government closest to the people. Each state is divided into smaller units called local governments.

There are 774 local government areas in Nigeria. The local government council comprises the local government chairman who is in control of the council. He works with councillors and other elected members.
