TOPIC: Stress and Intonation: Stress and Unstressed Words in Sentences

Stress and Intonation

Stress is an extra force placed on a part of a word.

Intonation is the rise and fall of pitch.

There are two intonation patterns. These are:

  1. The rising tone.
  2. The falling tone.

The rising tone is used:

(a) When we ask a Yes/No question

Examples

  1. Did you see the driver?
  2. Have you found the bunch of keys?
  3. Is she your mother?
  4. Can you ride a bicycle?
  5. Did you have you bathe before coming to school this morning?

(b) In incomplete statements

  1. While the national anthem was going on ———-
  2. The team that won the football match ————-

The falling tone is used when:

(a) When asking wh-questions.

Example

  1. What is your name?
  2. Who are you?

(b) In complete statement:

  1. I am a boy.
  2. She is my friend.
  3. I have passed the examination.
  4. You may get it.
