Present and past continuous tense are tenses of verbs – Remember that verbs are action words?

Present continuous tense is a tense that describes an on-going action in the present. Past continuous tense is a tense used to describe actions continued in the past.

Examples of sentences with verbs in the present continuous tense:

  1. She is riding a bicycle.
  2. The children are playing football.
  3. He is typing the letter.
  4. Thomas is watching a football match.
  5. Goodness is taking her bath.

Examples of sentences with verbs in the past continuous tense:

  1. Rosemary was feeding the baby when I returned.
  2. Kingsley was making a noise while the teacher was teaching.
  3. The farmer was watering the crops.
  4. I was driving when he called.
  5. She was playing when the visitors came visiting.

Exercises/Assignment

  1. Define present and past continuous tense respectively.
  2. Construct three sentences with verbs in the present continuous tense.
  3. Make three sentences with verbs in the past continuous tense.
