GRADE 3 : BASIC SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY : WEEK 4

WEEK/TERM: THIRD TERM /WEEK 4

CLASS: Grade 3

DATE: 26th June, 2020

SUBJECT: Basic Science and Technology

TOPIC: Heat and Temperature

Reference: Stan Basic Science and Technology for primary 4.

Brief explanation

Heat and temperature are two related words. Heat is a form of energy. It flows from one place to another and it is useful in our day to day activities. Heat causes a change in temperature.

Notes for the pupils

Meaning of Heat

Heat is a form of energy due to difference in temperature. It can be transferred from one place to another.

Listed below are the methods of Heat Transfer

  1. Radiation
  2. Conduction
  3. Convection

Radiation: Radiation is heat from the sun that travels without an object.

Conduction: Conduction is heat that travels through a body as the body moves from one place to another.

Temperature

Temperature is the degree of heat or cold of a substance. It is measured in degrees centigrade or Celsius (0C), degree Fahrenheit (0F) and kelvin.

Effects of Heat on Substances

  1. Some substances melts when heat is applied to them e.g. plastic, ice etc.
  2. Liquid evaporates on heating.
  3. Heat gives us warmth at cold periods.
  4. Heat causes metals to expand.
  5. Liquid and gases expands on heating.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HEAT AND TEMPERATURE

  HEAT TEMPERATURE
1 Heat is a form of energy

Temperature is the quality or property of

An object

2 Heat is obtained from solar energy, chemical energy and mechanical energy. Temperature is obtained when a substance is heated or cooled.
3 Heat causes change in degree or temperature Temperature is the heat generated.
4 Metric unit of measurement of heat is calories in joules in S.I unit. Temperature is measured in degree Celsius or Kelvin or

Fahrenheit.

5 Heat is the change that flows Temperature determines the direction of the heat flow.
